I am in a dark tunnel and I feel helpless.

Hi Jacky,

To really get into a dream, to get its full significance, more details are needed. However, how we FEEL in a dream is often a strong indicator of a similar feeling we have not quite fully acknowledged in our waking life.

For example, people who suppress anger, or who maybe express only a little of it in their waking life, can sometimes meet the full force of the buried anger in their dreams.

You say you feel helpless in your dream. This dream may have come at a time when you were feeling helpless about some area of your life, though it most probably is expressing a feeling of helplessness that you try to push away. In other words, this kind of dream can come up for people who try to push ahead despite feelings of helplessness. This, you see, is where more details of the dream are needed: to know the difference between these two possibilities and to investigate more.

Darkness in a dream can symbolise what you cannot 'see' in waking life: in other words, feelings of being 'in the dark' about something. However it is also true that finding yourself in a dark place in a dream can represent the darkness of your unconscious: the parts of yourself that you do not know or cannot see (so they are dark).

Tunnels can also mean all sorts of things. In life we go into a tunnel, usually, to get from one side to another ( a river, a mountain, an escape tunnel). So this dream may have come up for you at a time when your circumstances were changing (moving from one point in your life to another) and you were feeling helpless about not being able to see ahead - to map where you were going.

Tunnels also often appear in dreams to symbolise birth of the new. In this case they are like the darkness of the birth canal. Dark hallways and passageways in dreams can have similar symbolism.

But then sometimes we dig tunnels (tunnel down) or escape (tunnel out). Or we may be tunnelling deep into our inner reserves or unconscious. Any of these scenarios may apply to you, with the feeling of helplessness associated. (Again, fuller details of the dream would make this clear.)

Have a think about what is happening for you in your life now Jacky. Then see if any of the above seems to describe what you are going through or feeling deep down inside.

And remember! Whatever happens, there is ALWAYS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!
