Subject: a wide birth!

I looked down and delightedly saw that I was pregnant.

I mustn't have realised so it was a surprise. Anyway my belly was wide rather than the typical pointed outlook of pregnant women. I just shrugged and assumed it was because I had put on so much weight.

The father was a guy I know and this was fine by him and by me.

My brother in law walked me down to a strange shoreline where there was a narrow length of sand with tides ebbing and flowing on both sides. He let go of my hand and I walked barefoot with growing trepidation, for the tide was rushing in faster and rougher.

I wanted to go home. I went back and my best friend was with me. I was confused about her demeanour because she seemed indifferent to my pregnancy and presence.

This happened with my sister too and I wondered if they cared.

I was delighted with my belly though and could feel the quite big and healthy baby inside me. Sometimes I would place my hand on my lower stomach as the baby coughed. I could hear it cough and feel it with my hand. I wasn't worried at all for I knew it was healthy and fine. I put other people's hands on it to feel it too.

Hi Jade,

There's a lot in your dream and I'm sure others will respond too. Pregnancy often symbolises your creativity: what you are gestating and getting ready to produce in waking life. What interested me was your choice of title "A Wide Birth" and the contrast between the width of your pregnant abdomen and the narrowness of the strip of sand which filled you with such trepidation.

In which ways do you feel, in your life now, as if you are on this narrow strip of sand? Is narrow-mindedness an issue in your life? Are you growing some really broad-minded views to counteract this narrow-mindedness, or are you brewing up some lateral (wide) approaches/products which you will soon present to the world?

Is it time for you to give a "wide bErth" to some narrow-minded people or situations in your life now?

Like the baby, what do you need to 'cough up' - which feelings do you need to get off your chest?

There's a lot more, but that's a helpful starting point I hope.

Yes, think broad and wide!
