A steel pole, about 100 ft. tall with a small platform on top, has been erected in the middle of my gravel workplace parking lot.

I don't know why it is there. It has a steel ladder with side railings, so I climb it.

On top is a large earthen dish that takes up most of the platform. I look around at my view from 100 ft. up. Then I grab the sides of the platform and place my knees on it so I can lean over the dish to see in.

I don't feel secure after my feet leave the ladder. The platform is small and there is no railing. I peer into the dish and view a town from the height of a jet plane.

I have the sensation that this is how high I really am, and I will never be able to get back down.

Then I look up to see that I am really just 100 ft. up. This is a great relief and I want to climb back down. I am very insecure up there. I don't feel secure until I find the top ladder rung with my left foot and the railing with my left hand.

Hi Diane.

I could feel your dizzying heights a way up there. Are you feeling that you are seeing things in a different way these days? Perhaps with a point of view that you've never seen before?

I wouldn't doubt that you would have a great deal of trepidation as you step from familiar ground to the unknown. The earthen dish is an interesting image -- almost pointing to the fact the there is earth above. Or footing? Or a dish with the capacity to feed you? Does that make any sense?

I'm thinking that even though you choose to return back down the ladder, that you have already become comfortable with a new way of seeing things. The steel pole was not there before and now you are secure on its top ladder rung! This is a great thing, don't you think?

Angela.

ps. Re your question of spacing a while back, just double space between paragraphs.

Diane,

I too had my own reaction to heights, sweaty palms and all.

I notice that you mention "side" often. Have you chosen a "side" recently in something? If so, does that side have something to do with your (k)needs?

There's a lot of "earthy" references, too, like the earthen dish, high over the gravel at work. In spite of the insecure feeling, I get a good feeling of the mixing of the imagery of earth and sky, like you have some good balance there. You can go up feeling safe, it's the platform that bothers you. Taking that word apart, I see "form." So you go up to find form, a great exercise, I think. And when you get up, you find that you're still on earth! Cool!
