Subject: The Devil Writes Poetry Too |
Alazail |
14:08 12/03/2000 |
I attended an underground poetry reading for the purpose of reviewing the scene for a column I was working on.
The dark, smoky room was filled with an array of people dressed in all black.
As I stood towards the back of the swelling crowd, I noticed that the person on stage was leading the group in a low-voiced chant. As I strained to hear what they were mumbling, I was handed a sheet with the words printed in bold letters. I was urged to chant along, but instead I continued to listen while following along to what they were saying on my piece of paper.
The crowd got increasingly louder with each repeating verse: "Praise the lamb; praise the lamb; peace to the elephant; praise the lamb." The words got so loud that they seemed to echo inside of my soul, reaching to the depths of my very being.
This became quite frightening and I began to become disoriented.
I stared at the paper hoping that the words that were making me crazy would also ground me. Instead, my sight was pulled down to the bottom of the page, where chicken-scratch letters were being written by an invisible force: "The devil writes poetry too."
I looked up to the stage in a panic and recognized the face of the leader briefly as someone I had met in a prior dream. His eyes seemed to meet mine and hold me steady for a second and then I woke up shaking.

hi alazail,
cellars, lower rooms, underground etc may represent subconscious thought - the stuff we are feeling without often realising it, our true fears, feelings etc. Places where we can't see things clearly. Initially you can barely see, hear or understand but as you stay longer vision and sound sharpens up to send the message home. I think sometimes if we aren't getting something, it comes to us in our dreams in a more and more confronting manner to "awaken" us from our "slumber". These people are now shouting the message too loudly to really have you hear it and take notice. It has the desired affect but the message is cryptic. What do lambs and elephants mean to you? I immediately thought of lamb to the slaughter, and "prays the lamb" as in the lamb prays for itself. Lambs and elephants to me are easy prey because of their innocence and slowness/bulkiness respectively. A chant to honour the victims or weaklings that are sacrificed because they aren't more cunning and agile be nature. Survival of the fittest kind of thing. You are there to do work but now you find your job is to review the work of the devil. Will you do the job or decline it? Will you do something that you don't want to do, that scares you big time or will you attempt to make sense of it and review it for the column? How does this relate to how you feel about your work and what you do?
some ideas that i hope help,
Janelle |

Alazail, I hear your unconcious depths shouting praise for your innocence(lamb) and peace to your size, strength and power(elephant). What frightens you away from this grounding experience that touches your soul? Chicken(frightened easily) scratch(superficial, insubstantial.Nothing like the bold, shouting print). No real power there. Only scarey because it comes from an unseen place.Let the devil write all the poetry he wants. His writing looks pretty shakey next to yours. My guess is that power and innocence together give him a fright. Diane |

Hi Alazail, Janelle and Diane,
Adding to these thoughts, Alazail, consider the man who held you in eye contact at the end of the dream. If you know him in waking life, you will be able to name his personality/approach to life. If you know him only from the previous dream of him, try to do this as if peering into a story. What you come up with (his attributes) are likely to be attributes or issues within yourself, which you are staring at, in conscious recognition, possibly for the first time.
"Eye contact" in a dream is often a visual metaphor for "I contact": contacting an aspect or issue within yourself that has been pushed into the unconscious and which it is time to acknowledge.
The devil sometimes appears in dreams to represent that which we have disowned and pushed away about ourself (made 'bad' as opposed to the 'good' self we show the world and believe ourself to be).
Add this in with Janelle and Diane's thoughts and questions ... and you will start to see a picture emerge.
Let us know how you go ... and remember that your interpretation will be relevant to what was happening for you when you had the dream.
There is still more to comment on in this short dream, so is there anyone else out there who'd like to unfold it further or add more questions?
Wishing you much peace, Alazail, Jane Anderson |

The only things I am getting re this are black and underground - subconscious - and in relation to the lamb since we're referring here to the Devil there is mention of the lamb in the Bible somewhere (?) From memory I think it had something to do with Revealations. May be worth a look if you treat it metaphysically and symbolically, not literally. I also keep getting the meek shall inherit the Earth - lambs for me are indeed meek and mild and very innocent.
Elephant - strength for me mainly. Also an Elephant never forgets, and is extremely protective of family. There is an Indian God Ganesh (not sure of exact spelling)in the form of Elephant and it is said he was the remover of obstacles.
Poetry - for me is self expression of feelings and observations into words.
The Devil - well now he's an interesting character - once had a dream experience that I was facing him in a room and my grandparents were present and terrified. I just kept saying it's OK he can't hurt you unless you believe he can whilst in my head repeatedly saying the Lord's Prayer over and over. Suddenly this dark form of what I perceived to be the Devil changed into a big black blob and rushed towards me with lightning speed hitting my solar plexus and moving through me like bullet. Never did quite work out whether the energy of that aspect of Self actually went all the way out the back of me or just merged with me. As as soon as it hit I woke up and all I knew when I did wake up was that is scared the shit out of me and had me unsettled for quite a few hours.
For me this self healing and dream journey I have been on for 8 years now has been about integrating every single aspect of Self that exsists and more times than not that is done in dreamstate.
We all have our dark sides and once we can integrate them without fearing them we can then use them for a better purpose. Fear is also contraction of energy and love expansion.
Have no idea if any of that helps but hope so.
With love, Cheryl. |

Alazail,
I get a feeling almost of panic while you are watching the letters spelled out invisibly. You were brought into the low to be challenged - it is up to you whether you wish to face that or not. The devil in me is something I cannot accept about myself, and continue to struggle and fight. Then I am brought deep and low and under to be re-made over and over. I wonder what feelings, other than shaking your soul, are in the dream? Or is it your feelings that you struggle with? You are urged to "chant the sheet." Who is doing the urging? The I who contacted?
Good to hear from you Alazail. Hope you stick around |
