Hi Halley,
I sympathize, these dreams are terrible. You could interpret this many ways. This may sound weird, but I wonder if you snore. I know someone who used to have nightmares like this and it turned out to be sleep apnea- a condition where you actually stop breathing during sleep. The pain in the dream was actually real albeit exaggerated.
My second thought is that you may have had some trauma that you have not yet dealt with. I myself used to have nightmares that I was being "hunted", usually to be killed (20+years). They went away after I dealt with a childhood trauma.
If it is neither of these, consider what has happened to you over the past seven years. Is there something happening that is "killing" you? A major life change or a bad situation? Try to assess what is going on in your life when the dream is at its worst.
