Subject: Panda & Vegemite Sandwich

Kirsty

22:40 26/10/1999

I am a tourist guide taking a group of Asian tourists through my city.

We are not anywhere I recognise, however, but walking in an open field. It's really beautiful. I walk on ahead of the rest and begin singing to music that comes from the sky.

We get to a platform above water, a river. I realise I have a vegemite sandwich in my hand and I don't want it. Instead of throwing it all away I break off a chunk and throw it over the edge.

Suddenly the tourists murmur and point: far off there are a group of panda bears, huge ones, crossing the width of the river.

One breaks from the group. He swims over to us, climbs the platform and makes his way towards me. Then he smashes me in the head with his huge paw and swims away back to his panda friends.

My head hurts, but I return to daydreaming, realise the sandwich again, break off a chunk again and throw it in the river. The panda comes over and hits me again.

This happens a few more times, before the panda tells me to follow him and dives under the water. I dive too, and though the river looked muddy brown, it is clear blue underneath. It is the bottom of a huge swimming pool.

He shows me that I am polluting his home by throwing the sandwich in it. I nod that I understand.

Hi Kirsty

I'm going to look further at your dream today whilst I'm at "work", but initially I can't help but think that Panda is a pun on "pandering" - who are you pandering to at the moment?

I'll get back to you about the rest tonight! Great dream!

What do you associate vegemite with? for me it reminds me of my childhood (when I was sick the only thing I could eat was vegemite on toast) or even now if I'm hungover - vegemite on toast picks me up? do you have any personal associations with vegemite? (I know it sounds wierd!).

Hi Kirsty,

Around the time of this dream were you involved in a project that made you feel like you wanted to change yourself? Did you want to adopt a new style or the mentality of the group? Were you involved with a group, or others, or a project that made you question your capabilities and all that you had formerly accepted?

Is vegemite a staple household item in NZ like it is in Australia? The music from the sky and nice feeling about it suggests a place or space you liked being in. Guiding a group suggests having responsibility, alot on your shoulders, being in control, guiding others. An Asian group and Panda's typically from China. Foreign entities or matter that you aren't completely familiar with but tackle anyway. You have a vegemite sandwich which is very familiar but you don't want it. Perhaps you were drawn to something new. Perhaps you were trying to master or take control of something unfamiliar. You don't really want the familiar so you pull it apart and keep somebits but reject other bits. Drawn to a new scene. It perhaps scares you abit, hence the murky water. However you dive in to find that the surface murkiness isn't how it really is underneath it all. It's really ok when you get down to it. The Panda is perhaps trying to make you aware of bad habits, of what you are doing without realising. How your behaviour is hampering your path. Keep your old habits, what's familiar etc (eat the vegemite sandwich), or throw it all away properly. You can't be completely successful with your new venture/group/project whilst you are unaware of how your old ways are messing things up. Foot in both camps. Perhaps it is laziness, or indecision, or fear of the unknown... Not wanting the sandwich, but not wanting to throw it all away. When you do discard it, it is in bits and you toss it into the river instead of the bin.

Does any of this ring true?? I agree with JuliA - it is a great dream!
