Subject: Buying a house

Janelle

18:20 23/10/1999

I visited a house that was for sale. I went inside and it had a lived-in kind of country look to it. It was really nice and cosy, interesting with lots of potential.

I was really interested but its position concerned me a lot.

It was on a fair bit of land which once would have been quite a rural setting. The barn lent evidence of being a farm once, which was all great. The problem was the closeness of the new highway to its right. About 100 metres away was a busy, obtrusive and noisy freeway rising up to block the view. It was an eyesore and really affected the great house and surrounding land.

Lots of people were interested in buying the house and I felt a sense of urgency if I wanted it.

I was plagued with doubt and confusion but thought it too good too pass up. The amazing thing was that it only cost $27,000 which was a steal for the house and land. But the highway? I was feeling ambivalent but thought I'd regret it if I didn't grab it. After all it was only $27,000!

So I asked the owner to consider my application and began to fill in forms. She asked me lots of questions about my circumstances and some personal questions about my life. I answered her as favourably as I could. I felt a bit childlike as I was seeking her approval or good regard. I also felt a bit nervous at taking such a step and apprehensive about whether I was making a good move or not. I wanted time to consult with friends and family but if I went away there was a good chance I'd lose out altogether to someone else.

Finally I decided to apply for it and if I ultimately didn't want it I would just give it to Beth, a friend of mine who I knew would love it. Or at the very least she could rent it.

Hi Janelle

My first feeling about your dream was that you are currently looking for/ have found a new path/interest/ state of mind - is it really the one you want?

Does a house in the country have any personal connatations to you? did you grow up in the country or have any particular association with this house or houses in the country generally??

I wonder what the cosy, expansive, relaxing house (state of mind) refers to in your waking life? I suspect that a house in the country refers to a relaxed state of mind, and how fortunate you are to be looking at one that has lots of 'potential'!!!

Could it be there is a situation at the moment where you are seeking new potential, peace and quiet and to further expand that area of your life only to find that it is being side-tracked by a "highway" (something that is taking your energy, solitude away from you?) could it be a person or undesirable situation?

The fact that the highway was to the right is significant - right brain being analytical, rational, the male side of the brain. What is it in your life that is being causing you to be busy, is intruding and noisy - blocking potential bliss and peace & quiet from your life. Is it a state of mind you are striving for or NEED at the moment?

An eyesore - 100 metres away - what is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU that is causing this unrest obstruction?

As there was a sense of urgency - are you being pressured in waking life to take something/someone that you can see the problems, "eyesores" and everyone is telling you to 'take it' but you feel otherwise. Could this be a lesson to trust your instincts? Would you have bought the house if there wasn't the pressure?

The cost price = $27,000 - is this significant of any sum in your life at the moment. Initially I saw the 2+7 = 9 which is endings, the end of a cycle, preparation for the birth of the new........

So it was a bargain and the timing was crucial, so how could you/would cope with that highway, how could you compensate or best cope with that highway - what did you have to sacrifice? are you sacrificing something dear to you to please others? Can you see the situation with the owner in your waking life.... a situation where you are trying your best to please and impress, rather than stepping back to look at the bigger picture.... yes the house was cheap but what are you really buying?

Who is Beth, why would you give it to her? Why would she love it? could she live with the highway whereas you coudn't? Why would you give it her and let her rent it (if she didn't like it) - why wouldn't you rent it out?

After reading this a couple of times I can't help but be struck that you made a quick decision and compromised just because it was cheap and then thought about giving it away anyway. Take some time out? listen to your instincts? what is right in front of you that you're taking just because its there!?

I'm sorry there's so many questions, there's so much in this dream.

Just some thoughts - hope they're of some help.

Hi Janelle

In addition to JuliA's totally insightful comments and great questioning, here are a few other aspects to consider:

The first thing that struck me while reading your dream was the "its position concerned me a lot". This gave me the immediate feeling that your whole dream was about a position you are in which your unconscious is rather more concerned about than your conscious mind is.

The next thing that struck me was the mention of the barn which "lent evidence of having been a farm once". My reaction was "a farm is domesticity and production". I felt this referred either to a time when you had children or when you were a child. (Terrible analogy, 'domesticity and production', sorry, but it did give me that feeling!)

So why might your current position, perhaps around the subject of domesticty or production, concern you?

$27,000 made me wonder if the age 27 was significant in this respect. What did you 'pay for' (emotionally) when you were 27? Or what bargain or opportunity do you feel you missed out on then?

What is the main difference between you and Beth? I would suggest the dream is questioning whether you want to move on into the future in a Beth-like way or not. What would you have to give up to be more like Beth? I think you'll find your answers among all the questions JuliA and I have posed, but I'd love to see other people's thoughts, feelings and reactions too. Watching a dream unravel from many angles and viewpoints is a wonderful process to behold.

And so we all walk around the base of the same mountain and see it from its many different angles according to our views.

I hope this helps throw some light.

Wow! I'm abit dumbstruck but excitedly so! Thank you both!!

I got into a relationship when I was 27 and it was the one as far as we both were concerned. It lasted four years only to end very suddenly and sadly last year. It left me feeling many things, most profoundly great loss at what had been hoped for. Six months before it ended I finally (never sould decide before) that yes I did want kids one day. Well just as I accepted this revelation my relationship ended. It was quite devastating. The tick of the biological clock has been on my mind ever since. I've now been in a "new" relationship for about 3 months. I don't want to waste time on a long relationship that's essentially going no where again. As a result I feel a pressure to not let this one linger on if its wrong. I can't figure out if it is wrong or if is just fear making me doubt things from time to time. How can you predict the future of anything? I know all of this and am pretty easygoing. The child issue is directing my inner thoughts alot, putting on the pressure abit inspite of all my rationalisation and sensibility. So! That's very possibly at the root of this dream. Beth is a friend who has had a tough life and would rather settle for less and stay in her comfort zone than take braver steps. She's just put up with the highway. It would bother me and in my waking life I wouldn't buy this place.

I'm going to absorb all of this for abit in order to better organise it and understand it. All the insights and questions are spot on. I just get so amazed that I didn't "see" the signs for myself! Thank you so much Julia and Jane,

Janelle

Thanks for the feedback Janelle! Not seeing the signs for ourselves can often be the case: after all, our dreams are reflecting our UNconscious thoughts and patterns back to us: it takes us a little longer to integrate them into our less-informed conscious self! If we were already clear on the signs, we wouldn't need the dreams. This is one of the great benefits of the Dream Forum: it is an ideal sharing environment. People standing a step or two away from the dreamer's situation can often see more clearly. In return, they receive similar gifts.

Reading through the forums gives an overview of the process of dream interpretation, and, for regular visitors, a touch of drama as they read each post and then wait to hear the responses!

Newcomers may not be aware that this site was launched as a new-look only this month, and that the old forums were of a style which could not be translated into the new system. Soon the forums will be as busy and as informative as before, but for those of you who really enjoy the insight gained through reading forum posts and replies, you can access the original forums whch have been created as Archives. The archives are enormous - and are available for members to visit at leisure.

Meanwhile, Janelle, we all look forward to hearing the results of your contemplations. Other dreams may continue the theme or offer creative solutions.

You say "How can you predict the future of anything?". In a general sense, and still allowing for great mysteries and awe, there are ways in which you can, working with dream symbolism and an understanding of the power of the unconscious mind to manifest. (See "The Shape of Things to Come".)

Be kind to yourself. Jane Anderson
