Hi Kate
'Being on a hillside at night. The hill was covered in open "cave dwellings". I was wandering about and whilst the scene looked abit freaky, I wasn't scared. '
Night time often refers to unconscious, or very deeply buried, issues that we are dealing with. The cave dwellings feel, to me, like a 'primeval way of living.'. Perhaps the dream is about 'bsic and primeval human feelings'? Just an idea.
'I looked out from various vantage points at various times and saw (separately) three grim reaper characters. The strange bit was that each was robed in a different grim reaper costume. One was from perhaps the 16th century, one from perhaps the nineteenth century, and one represented modern times.'
Again, this seems to relate to history - human development through the ages. How death has been represented to us at various times during human history - although you start at the 16th century, which is a lot later than when we lived in cave dwellings. Death rarely means actual death - it usually means transformation by allowing something old to 'die' in otder for the new to be 'born.'
'They were odd characters, standing alone not too far from me. The word "sacrifice" remained with me through the dream and when I woke up.'
Sacrifice can mean death, in the old biblical and mythical sense of making sacrifices to the gods - which is again a very old and primeval image.
I'm afraid I can't put all this together and give you a meaning for your dream - only you can do that as it your dream and your symbolism. But you may get some meaning from it by thinking along the lines of what you need to sacrifice, kill off, let die in order to 'please the gods' so that something new can be born within you.
Very vague, I know, but I hope it helps with your thinking.
Regards
Judy
