"Smells"

Author

Subject: Smells

Belinda

01:02 26/07/2000

Okay, this is going to sound crazy but I'm going to post this.

On the weekend I had two experiences with no apparent explanation.

Firstly, I was at one end of the house and I could smell this smell which was so distinct from a house that I lived in over 10 years ago. I owned a dog at that house and used a particular brand of cleaning chemical for the carpet to clean up after "puppy had an accident" and I could just smell this very distinct smell -exactly the same. Now, my present house does not have carpet. We have tiles. I do not have a dog and had not done any recent cleaning using chemicals and I certainly don't buy that brand anymore. In fact, I hate chemicals and try to only use them to a minimum.

Then, on Saturday I am sitting watching TV and I can smell toast - you know that smell - toast in the toaster. I live with my 10 year old son on acreage so if neighbours were cooking toast it would have to come from a long way away. Again, I had not cooked at all that day. There was just no apparent reason.

I was going to post this to ask if anyone else has had this happen, but decided that nothing relative had come out of it.

Tonight I was reading Melinda's syncronicty post and in that post she mentions Cairns.

Okay - I swear - on Friday I got an email from my best friend who lives in Cairns and she told me that her and her boyfriend and another couple I know where going up to Cape Tribulation that weekend to camp on the beach and she said "I'll be thinking of you while I am toasting marshmallows on the beach".

Now this could be a sync or a co-incidence, but suddenly smelling smells for no apparent explanation is a new experience. Anyone else out there had this happen?

Oh and now that I think of it, my ex-husband and his family just bought a dog - oh no..here it comes as I am writing it...they are/were Amway distributors and that chemical I was talking about was an Amway product. The ex is the one who I lived with in that house 10 years ago. My son talked to them last night and got the news about the dog.

As I started this post I had no idea of the relevance of the chemical smell.

All I can say is "weird", even if it isn't a sync.

I have a thousand things to do. I'm taking off for a couple weeks later tonight, but just can't resist poking my nose in here (ha!) and adding/relating to this.

Smell being one of the stongest emotional senses, I am not surprised that such a link would come up for you Belinda. But fascinating, is it not, just how powerful that sense can be!

I've got a couple examples. They come very strong when I'm at my noon swim. The scent of Aspirins was very strong one of the first times I was in the pool. Then watermellon.

I dreamt once of the smell of an open glass of red wine.

I think you are absolutely right to connect these to synchronicities and past experiences. Olfactory sense is perhaps one more tool for communicating with the unconscious.

Angela.

ps. Belinda, my sister called to leave a message on my machine a couple days ago that she's been synching with 'butt'ons! The impact of that hit me last night as I was sewing buttons on a baby sweater I'd just knit for a friend! Though, they weren't white...

Sorry for those of you not members.

Hi Belinda and Angela

Belinda does the "10 Years" mean anything to you?

The house you used to live in 10 years ago? Your son is 10 years old - it stuck out when I read your post? Is there a lesson/journey you need to remind yourself of or reconnect with? Or maybe you've just come so far?

Is someone or something in your life "toast" - do you know this expression - when someone is in trouble or if you're angry you say "that's it he's toast"!?

OR

Does something or someone in your life need cleaning up now?

Just playing around with the possibilities. Have you read Jane's the "Shape of Things to Come"????

Hi guys

Thank you both for your input. Very relieved to hear I'm not ready for the 'funny farm' just yet Angela. I guess the thing I forgot to mention was that these smells weren't just passing = the chemical one was around for (Julia!!!) 10 minutes...and the toast - on and off all day.

Yes Julia, the 10 years ago is quite significant. This ex who exited my life 6 years ago has now moved to within an hour and twenty minutes of me, whereas before that he was 2000 miles away. I have also recently realised that whilst we separated and divorsed on the physical level, I still have some emotional stuff "to clean up" - so you are dead right with that one!

I will need to give the "toast" issue more thought. Your suggestions make sense but those terms are not something I would use. I think of "toasting" someone for their good work or a new event in their life. I am sure more will come on this.

I have been reading Shape - through a long story it led me to this website and I've kind of been distracted from finishing it. I borrowed "Sleep On It" from the Library years ago and now that I am a member I wanted to re-read Sleep On It, there is still a lot I want to learn. I just have a couple of chapters left on Shape to go.

Angela - I hope you have a fantastic time away. If we don't hear from you I am sure we'll be "busting" until you get back. Also loved to hear about the buttons too - it just keeps going on and on - I can see I'll never live this butt thing down!

I tried to post you a reply earlier today but the computer encountered a few problems and I got an error message.

Thanks both again for your input - I really enjoy & appreciate the interaction with you guys.

Take care

Belinda

Well here's a "toast" to you cleaning up and resolving.

It's funny the translation some words can have - I forgot all about toasting someone!

Its odd that "Shape" in a very strange way re-lead me back to Jane too - I found the book in an Art Shop!!!!

Anyway we're both here!

This might be a bit late for you as I haven't been on the net for a week or so. No Belinda your not going funny. I spell my handcream from time to time and not only in the house. My father died last year and that's one thing he always did - use my handcream. I have even had the smell when I have been out in a wind. It upset me for a while to think he was still around, but it is well over twelve months since his death. It started not long after his sister had gone home when she stayed for three weeks after the funeral. Another thing is, on the day before the funeral I tried to turn on my transister but it wouldn't work. Sure thing at 7 am the next day it came on, I had evidently left it switched on. When I went to turn it off, it just went off itself. It works all right now. Anne

Sorry Belinda, that should have been smell my handcream and I didn't say that I have not had it on. And I meant you're not going funny, I think my brain is going!!! Anne

Hi Anne

Thank you for telling me your story. This is a new phenomenon for me, so I wonder if it will continue.

Anne, I am curious about your relationship with your father. Do you have any unresolved issues around him? Do you have a theory of why you smell the handcream even though he has passed over?

Thank you Anne for sharing your experience - it's good to know that other people have these experiences.

The other day I could smell pop corn - have no idea where that is going to lead or what it means yet. We shall wait and see.

Hi Belinda, I think that my father had some unresolved issues, like not finishing his memoirs that I was typing. I just have not touched his book since he died. I think he wants me to finish his book and I will. As a friend said he's probably looking after me. It's funny that no one else can smell the perfume of the hand cream. Actually the first smell that came to me was something like the sauce of spaghetti bolanaise, but have never eaten it in this house and cannot eat it anyway because of my wheat allergy. Han hour after came the first of many smells of that handcream. Quite a few times the smell was when I was sitting at the computer, he proably was looking over my shoulder, but it's getting fewer and farther in between. We were good friends and in the later years I would drive him anywhere he wanted to go. Anne

WHAT IS
SYNCHRONICITY?

Jane Teresa's Explanation

Jane Teresa Anderson

WHAT IS SYNCHRONICITY?

________

Synchronicity occurs when you experience a coincidence, or several coincidences, that seem so bizarre that you feel they must be meaningful in some way.

Some people believe that synchronicities are signs to follow, to lead you to where you are 'meant' to be. My understanding, however, is that not all synchronicities are to be followed, because ...

Synchronicities are SYMBOLS of where you're at, not signs to follow.

Synchronicities speak the same symbolic language as dreams.

When you experience a synchronicity, you are witnessing a change within yourself, an insight, a birth of something that has been unconscious bubbling up into consciousness.

At such times of change we see, all around us, symbols that reflect our shift in perception and self-understanding. This is synchronicity.

To understand this fully, and to see why it is not always appropriate to follow synchronicity, you can read my book, THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME. This way you can also discover how to read the synchronicities in your life and how to act on them in positive, life-enhancing ways.

Reality may never feel the same again!

______

P.S.

In Jungian terms all synchronicities begin with a dream.

The dream comes first, then the symbol from the dream appears in waking life in ways that seem incredibly meaningful - though, classically, it is hard to understand, consciously, what that meaning is.

This is because the dream is painted by your unconscious mind in advance of your conscious mind 'catching up'. When the insight (unconscious shift) is big, synchronicities follow.

What happens is that your incredibly powerful unconscious mind (far more powerful than your conscious mind) manifests its insight physically into your waking life. (You have changed - the world, as you experience it, changes in accordance.)

It usually takes up to a couple of weeks before your conscious mind understands the symbolic dream manifesting in your waking life as synchronicity.

Being human, as we all are, we often forget the original dream but still experience the synchronicities.

There are many excellent reference sources on Jungian synchronicity.

My approach is largely Jungian, but slightly shifted.

Again, if you are seriously in-depth interested, I suggest you read my book "THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME" to understand where I am coming from.

Quite simply, synchronicity is a waking dream and interpreting it as such is immensely enriching.

... and interpreting it as such
is immensely enriching."
