I fly but often it is hard work. Occasionally I bounce along the ground becoming airborne from time to time, sweeping my arms frantically like a swimmer heading upstream against a rising tide.

Last night however I flew with ease, very high and very self-directed, having no problem rising above the power lines and sweeping up as high as I liked. It was wonderful.

But at daylight I got nervous about how high I was and came down very quickly. It seemed that during the night I could soar, but not during the day. Seeing the ground so far beneath me made me so nervous.

Overview Interpretation & Dream Alchemy Practice suggestion

OVERVIEW INTERPRETATION

Flying in dreams is often about rising above a situation or reaching a higher potential. In dreams (at night) we often glimpse our true potential, whereas awake (in day time) we often hold back from achieving that potential (aiming that high) because of various fears or beliefs about our capabilities.

No matter how high we fly in life we always need to balance this with also being grounded. Dreams often show us when we’re out of balance.

Your dream suggests you have difficulty getting things ‘off the ground’ or having the confidence to ‘fly high’, to explore and achieve your higher potential.

Your dream suggests you have a belief that reaching that higher potential is ‘hard work’. Your dream shows you ‘bouncing along’ through life but never really getting the lift you want.

Your dream suggests one reason is your fear of going too high. In the dream everything is fine as long as you can’t see how far you’ve come. In your life now, what holds you back? Why might you fear making too much progress?

In your dream you felt you were working against the tide. Where in your life now do you have this feeling? If you can identify that situation then that is the issue your dream is addressing.

You will find it helpful to read ‘I'm Flying’ in Dream Alchemy, pages 25-31.

DREAM ALCHEMY PRACTICE

If you can identify that situation in your waking life where you feel you are working against the tide in your efforts to achieve a higher potential, then:

Write a list of all the things you can think of that are holding you back (in that situation).

Write a list of all the things that are encouraging you forward in the same situation.

Then answer this question:

“If you were successful in this situation, what would be the one thing that you would feel uncomfortable about?”

Your answer is the key to discovering the belief or fear that is holding you back.

It sounds to me like you have a very rich inner life! Your subconscious (the dark, or unseen part) knows how to fly - and does it well - and yet in the light of day (conscious awareness) you get afraid.

Are you afraid to fully express yourself in some area of your life?

Would you love to release your fears -and just "take off" - do your own thing?

Not concern yourelf about the things that seem to keep you grounded?

It is the opposite of the old favourite of being 'afraid of the dark' worried about unseen influences.

Your dream could be sufggesting that you look at your conscious 'worries' to see if indeed they are the restrictions that prevent you from doing what you really love.

Hi Andrea, Thanks for your interpretation. I agree that I think the dream was about fears. I'm just not sure how to address the things that keep me grounded though. I don't feel I'm a fearful individual. Tend to be a bit of a risk taker really... so not sure where to take it from here. Any ideas. Suzanne

Suzanne - could be worth checking if the 'risk taking' you decxribe is of the kind that ends badly - or if it's the kind the is self-nurturing and adventurous.

We are all meant to take risks because that is how we grow and change - experience being the basis of wisdom. But if it regularly ends badly - say as in the case of destructive relationships, extremes of danger etc - then that could suggest a call to look at that..

Just some ideas..

i usually find that i fly when i feel the most oppressed. flying to me represents trying to get away from my problems.

your being able to bounce along without smooth flight could suggest that your problems are too weighty, they are weighing on your mind. you are too close to the problem to see a solution.

once you do find a solution, you will become fearful of the unknown fate awaiting you. (day / night). it is a leap of faith. have faith. the incident will be minor. and it most probably relates to work.
