Subject: unfinished wedding

My dad, my mom and I were in this hallway and it didn't seem familiar.

Somehow it came to me that I had previously accepted a marriage proposal although it took place at my current age of eighteen and my husband-to-be was my ex-boyfriend.

My mother insisted I wore her wedding dress to take photos. Once I put it on I saw that it was an old fashioned bouffant dress, however it was all BLACK! I freaked out and told her that you can't wear black to your own wedding but mom insisted that it was fine.

Completely upset my parents gave me a credit card and I had 10 minutes to buy a wedding gown before the store closed. I was pressed for time because I was to be married very soon that day.

It was dark outside and instead of going to the stores on the left I went to the ones on the right. I couldn't find a dress because I was distracted and ended up looking at hair salons.

My aunt appeared and started to do my hair into a French twist. I found myself back at the house and had this white dress although it wasn't a wedding gown and more like a prom dress. I accepted it.

Some family members appeared to set up the ceremony and I saw a stairway going up in the building. Sometimes I see my ex-boyfriend in a tuxedo: his face flashes and goes away. His mother entered the room I was in dressed in red.

I didn't feel overjoyed as a new bride-to-be should, but I did not feel dejected to the idea of getting married. I didn’t get as far as walking down the aisle. The dream went right up to the last minute preparations.

Note:

My ex-boyfriend: We had a gruelling and long break-up and even now I still have some feelings for him, as sometimes seems vice-versa.

The stairway: I'm not sure but it might be the stairwell of the building where my mom works. I volunteer there as well.

Hi Diana,

When we are ready for change, or in the process of integrating new changes into our lives, we often dream of unions or coming togethers of different kinds. Wddings fit this bill.

At the same time, when change is in the air we can only fully embrace the new (way of approaching life, new self) after letting go of the old. In dreams this process is often shown through death (of the old) and birth (of the new). Between the death and the birth is the integration (the new wholeness often represented by the wedding).

So, your black wedding dress could be seen as a mourning dress - death of the old that must first be experienced. (Black in dreams can also draw attention to the unconscious mind - that powerful part of you that you cannot see clearly - the part that is "in the dark".)

Your mother offered you her dress. Does your mother talk with you about the need to learn from the past and put it behind you? Or, could your mother do with letting go of previous ideals and moving on?

In the dream your parents accept that you do not wish to mourn (wear black) OR that you do not wish to proceed in an unclear frame of mind (in darkness, not knowing your mind). In a way, your dream says, "explore the options then". They give you a credit card - this is like "give yourself credit, then, to explore these options .." perhaps.

In the dream you ignore the shops on the left (in dreams the left is often your inner world) and go into the shops on the right (outer world). You choose a prom dress - prom is all about the "outer world" really, isn't it?

So your dream suggests that you may be ignoring the choices (shops are places of choice) available to you through exploring your inner world, instead looking towards the choices offered by the world out there.

The wedding does not take place, meaning that the processes you are going through are not yet complete.

You wear a red dress - could red be anger? Assertiveness? Life blood (vitality)?

Have a think about what 'red' and 'black' could represent in your life now, and about what you could do to explore these things (within your inner world) so that you can see your past more clearly, out to rest what needs to be put to rest - and move ahead in a new way.

There is a lot more to your dream, Diana. Others may add more insight and offer you more questions to contemplate to help you explore your dream.

Do get back to us, then we can take the dream further. Also other people visiting the Dream Forum love to see how a dream pans out for the dreamer.
