"Tidal Waves"

Author

Subject: tidal waves

This is a synch with my dreams... I sometimes have tidal wave dreams when I feel overwhelmed or as if things may come crashing down around me. I work for a VERY large company and it's going through internal restructuring in my division. Everyone is stressed out and the tidal wave dreams have started. Only this time, I was an observer in the dream --- kind of like I was filming the wave in a documentary. A day or two later when I was flipping through the channels, I landed on a documentary on tidal waves and their destruction. I actually saw the waves from my dream! Ironically, although each tidal wave dream has been different, I've never been hurt by one --- thank, goodness. Maybe this was a sign that I really am just an observer in life? During my 'documentary dream' and on the TV, it showed the mass amounts of water pulling back into the crest of the wave to build it up before it drove forward and wiped out the coast. Both times it was as if I were inside the wave or riding it - however, I was in a precarious spot and could easily be sucked into it and destroyed. I just found this synch unnerving because of the destructive nature. Any ideas?

I ask Jane for some help here - is this a universal archetype? What is its general meaning??? I spent almost a year dreaming of tidal waves. First my house was flooded by one, I wrote about it here (my kids swam between the ceiling and the surface of it - happy - then I dreamt that I took an elevator down to the beach with my kids , saw a tidal wave took the elevator back up,looked through a window and it dissolved into a calm beach - . Then I was on the beach, a tidal wave covered my kids and I two times but before the third round reached us I said, no, we're leaving and we scrambled quite peacefully out of its range. All these dreams were very calml despite the enormous waves and two were the results of incubation. thanks

Hi Dianne and Babel,

Well perhaps the synchronicity for me is the time I spent recording the story, last week, about tidal waves on our new audio tape, "Dream Sight Stories" ..... as you are both members you can read the story in the back-issues of 'News' in the Library - issue 2, "A Tsunami? No problem!"

Help is at hand for you there! (Or you can order the tape and get my spoken version along with the musical interpretation which is quite out of this world!!)

I have quite a few dreams about tidal waves and floods and hurricanes. A lot of times I find that I can breathe underwater. I think it would be interesting to figure out the meaning of this because as I said before I have had quite a few dreams about them since I was a young girl.

My dreams about tidal waves run a bit deeper... ok, now I open up --- when I was about 7 or so, I not only dreamed about them, but I literally heard them inside my head and it scared the living mess out of me. I felt as if they were sweeping me away. My grandmother described the same phenomenon - but the sound happened to her when she was about to have an out of body experience. A few years ago I found a book "Time is an Illusion" by Chris Griscom and she described the exact same sounds and feelings I had as a child and even as an adult -- they were related to astral projecting. OK - I know this is out there to many people, but as a child, I believe I related the sounds to waves because I've always lived near the beach. As an adult, the waves are so symbolic of emotions. Although none of my tidal wave dreams are the same, I am nearly always standing on the shore watching them build up and I'm either paralyzed or trapped because there is no possible place for me to go to avoid imminent disaster. ( By the way, I never claim to be able to spell worth a darn - pardon the horrible spelling) Most of the time, there are tons of people around. Amazingly enough, after the wave destroys everything, I have never seen anyone hurt. It's as if we disappear during the moment the wave actually hits and then we reappear when it's over. I haven't met many people who have tidal wave dreams. Maybe it's a sign of empathic or intuitive people? Has anyone on here ever taken the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) for personalities? Perhaps it's a classic personality type dream.

Jane, the show I was watching was actually about tsunami's. How about those beans?

Sorry for rambling - these have always fascinated me and now the dreams are in synch with things happening around me.

What is an MBTI? Jane thanks - I'll look into your News item. What is a tsunami? Will I find out in the News?

I have something to add here after reading the Newsletter about the tidal waves. Keeping your eyes open to the event-problem-confrontation, not running away, programming the next dream so as not to run away - yes to all. What I would like to add is this; we all have tools for our confrontations (our crutches on one level, our shovels, sculpturing picks on another. Jane - I read again about you in the dream leading - it seems like the strength of you having followers is what gives you the push, at the least the first push to go out against the wave. The convincing of a group turns into your own.. this your tool. (Am I off base?) We must develop our personal tools; for some it is the cautious wait until a proper sign arrives (we know when it is the sign), for some it is to open fire and se what flies back at you, the adrenalin preparing you for the next move. Identification of how we "forge forward with open our eyes" takes different forms for different psyches? yes, no? some ideas, I'd be happy to hear conglicting ideas, for this is a mere theory.

Hmmm. The newsletter hit home on many notes, but one. Although I think about trying to run in each of my tidal wave dreams, I never do because I know it would be fruitless. I ride it out in awe (and fear sometimes). They still return. Because they are each so different, I'm at a loss. What is the difference if I'm on shore vs. out to see? etc. Babel, I do agree that our approaches to problems are all different. Maybe the changes in each dream are also symbolic of how we should address situations.

An MBTI is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Test that describes personality types.

Hi Dianne, Babel and All,

Sorry to take so long in getting back on this one. These have been happily busy days ....

Dianne:

I have had a 'real' out of the body experience on a few occasions. (I say 'real' because I thought I had done this many times until I actually did!!!) With the 'real' ones, I hear the gurgling rush you mention too. It has an ascending pitch and increasing volume. (Interestingly, the music Euan composed for the Tsunami Story on our audio tape has the same 'rush', yet we hadn't discussed this.)

The other physical sensations that accompany an OBE for me are described in my book, "Sleep On It", which, as you are a member Dianne, you can access online through the Library.

Until you mentioned this, I hadn't considered a connection between tidal wave dreams and the physical sensations accompanyng the OBE. From my research and personal experience, the symbolism of tidal wave dreams stands, but as external sensations certainly can impinge on our dream scenarios, this is also a possibility.

On Beans, Dianne: Assuming you're referring to the "Enter the Twilight Zone" article: I haven't met Mr Heinz yet, but I'm full of beans (as was the child) about recent developments in the doc area.

Babel:

I guess you worked out that a tsunami is a tidal wave. There may be some analytical difference between them, but they have become synonymous words in many countries in common parlance. I think I've only just switched to tsunami from tidal wave in recent years. Running a global web site is a challenge in linguistic terms! I'm still a stick-in-the-mud for using my Engish spelling (programmes) and English-Australian spelling (cheques), but ... I wonder which Myers Briggs Type that would make me?

Dianne:

(I haven't done the MBTI test - but interesting point Dianne - could be insightful to see if there is a relationship between various personality tests and recurring dream types.)

Babel:

Yes, I'm sure you're right: pushed by the group (accepting the position of the leader in some areas of my life) is a bit like meeting a deadline. You JUST DO IT. In that sense, I guess, I'll face the tidal waves if I have to illustrate a point, whereas there is, as you say, a right time and a right place for everyone and the important thing is for people to KNOW when that right time and place is. My chosen job certainly is my way of forcing myself out into the open stream of vulnerability!

Dianne:

I know what you mean: I feel each tidal wave concerns a different situation or allows you to role play different approaches. It's possible that you allow the tidal waves to mount to the point where they DO enter your dreams, but that you then are (forced to?) face the wave then: and you do so, perfectly, by riding them out as you say. Did you notice your typo (they can be revealing): "out to see" instead of "out to sea"? I wonder if, in some sense, your tidal waves return to show you get a buzz out of the experience (seeing it, feeling it for yourself) - in other words, do you let things mount up because you enjoy the adrenalin rush of the deadline?

Just some belated thoughts.

By the way, I had to check back there to see which forum I was on. This set of exchanges is more reminiscent of our Members Community Forum than the public ones!

Dear tidal wave riders

It's been a while since I've dipped into the site, so it was a real surprise to me to find that, not only in the synchronicity forum, but also the members forum, there is mention of tidal waves.

Only last week I dreamed of going down to an expanse of water with my daughter, Claire. I find myself in the water and it starts to move, backwards and forwards, and suddenly I'm riding the crest of a huge wave which lifts me about 50 ft in the air. It is exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. I suddenly realise there is a boundary wall ahead and we are riding straight towards it. There is nothing I can do to guarantee my survivial, and I'm so terrified I blank out. When I 'come to', I find myself on the water's edge. I check my body for damage, but find I am completely unharmed.

My interpretation of the dream represented my terror of being exposed on TV for the first time. I felt the dream was preparing me for the thrill, the excitement and the terror of the filming(which was exactly how I felt when the event occurred).

After the filming, the exhilaration of the event was just like riding the crest of a wave. I felt my dream group and I really were able to communicate the importance of dreams to the awaiting audience. However, the elation quickly turned to terror when I re-arranged the events in my mind so that they appeared clumsy and amateurish.

The last part of the dream is reassuring to me: I am completely unharmed by the experience.

From this little dream and all your interesting comments, my only conclusion is that tidal waves are an overwhelming feeling - that feeling can be anything: sadness, joy, anger, fear, excitement, etc. No-one is harmed in either my dream or the dreams others have shared, so emotions cannot kill us, however powerful they are!

Jane& Carol: Wow. So true. When I tend to over analyze things, they do come on like tidal waves of emotion. When I just ride them out, I do pick myself up off the shore and note that I am unharmed eventhough everything around me is wet and sometimes in shambles.

Jane: I did just notice that I wrote "see" instead of "sea". I found that interesting. My natual avoidance to making premature decisions seems to bring on the tidal waves. I'm currently in a situation at work where I'm chosing to not ride out the tiny swells before the tsunami arrives, but to jump to another ship and sail away. Only after my recent trip to San Francisco, I now have have two ships waiting for me to board. Hopefully I don't burn the sails on the original ship if I tour the decks on the newly arrived ship with bigger sails. Then, I do believe I will "SEE" a rather large wave bearing down on me. The fear of the unknown is huge.

Oh, my. I just reread my post and realized I'm over analyzing my current situation even while attempting to avoid another tidal wave. What a hoot!

WHAT IS
SYNCHRONICITY?

Jane Teresa's Explanation

Jane Teresa Anderson

WHAT IS SYNCHRONICITY?

________

Synchronicity occurs when you experience a coincidence, or several coincidences, that seem so bizarre that you feel they must be meaningful in some way.

Some people believe that synchronicities are signs to follow, to lead you to where you are 'meant' to be. My understanding, however, is that not all synchronicities are to be followed, because ...

Synchronicities are SYMBOLS of where you're at, not signs to follow.

Synchronicities speak the same symbolic language as dreams.

When you experience a synchronicity, you are witnessing a change within yourself, an insight, a birth of something that has been unconscious bubbling up into consciousness.

At such times of change we see, all around us, symbols that reflect our shift in perception and self-understanding. This is synchronicity.

To understand this fully, and to see why it is not always appropriate to follow synchronicity, you can read my book, THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME. This way you can also discover how to read the synchronicities in your life and how to act on them in positive, life-enhancing ways.

Reality may never feel the same again!

______

P.S.

In Jungian terms all synchronicities begin with a dream.

The dream comes first, then the symbol from the dream appears in waking life in ways that seem incredibly meaningful - though, classically, it is hard to understand, consciously, what that meaning is.

This is because the dream is painted by your unconscious mind in advance of your conscious mind 'catching up'. When the insight (unconscious shift) is big, synchronicities follow.

What happens is that your incredibly powerful unconscious mind (far more powerful than your conscious mind) manifests its insight physically into your waking life. (You have changed - the world, as you experience it, changes in accordance.)

It usually takes up to a couple of weeks before your conscious mind understands the symbolic dream manifesting in your waking life as synchronicity.

Being human, as we all are, we often forget the original dream but still experience the synchronicities.

There are many excellent reference sources on Jungian synchronicity.

My approach is largely Jungian, but slightly shifted.

Again, if you are seriously in-depth interested, I suggest you read my book "THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME" to understand where I am coming from.

Quite simply, synchronicity is a waking dream and interpreting it as such is immensely enriching.
