Subject: Monkey experiment

Stephen O

I have been involved in a major experiment on chimpanzees, trying to boost or draw out their intelligence so they can communicate with man.

I am in the laboratory. A chimp seems to be playing baseball with coconuts and it has a fantastic eye for hitting. There is also a discussion about a picture (done by the chimp) that we believe represents a perfect copy of an ancient symbol. It has been folded in half and is a bit ragged where the paint has stuck and torn the paper. The image is an amalgam of purple and pink, but there is no clear image within it. I think the chimp artist had the power of speech. Indeed it was quite fluent.

Now I am watching an army unit marching along a suburban street that looks like Deakin in Canberra. The street scenery transforms and it is now in the midst of a tropical forest. This is a war zone. The army unit leader is talking (to the media?) about how chimps have been integrated successfully into the unit. They are accepted by, have bonded with and communicate effectively with the soldiers.

The only "problem" is that the unit’s progress can be slowed by the chimps’ need to communicate with wild chimps they meet along the way. This does not faze the unit leader, who sees it as positive.

Somehow linked into this dream is another scene in which I and some other people, including my 10-year-old daughter, are jumping into a large pond of the sort you see in a zoo enclosure. Small elephants are being thrown in and expanding (just add water). My daughter thinks they are very big and I say that while this is so, there are bigger ones. At this point, a larger elephant is added to the mix - a five metres tall elephant.

Note:

I had this dream recently while we were on holiday in Bali. We saw monkeys there and went on an elephant safari.

Hi Stephen,

Big dream! Just some starting points:

Chimps: in your dream, the question of drawing out intelligence. This drawing out may be represented by the Artist Chimp (artist - drawing). The colours of his drawing (feminine and therefore right brain Yin?) and the abstract quality of the drawing suggest a more intuitive type of communication or intelligence.

In conflict (war) they tend to wander off (sidetrack or lateral thinking?) to communicate with their wild counterparts. Suggests YOU have this intuitional (urge to communicate with your wild knowing) or lateral thinking type brain that may need drawing out further.

Elephants - umm - never forget? Memory kind of intelligence? Regurgitation of facts and figures kind of intelligence? Left brain kind of intelligence?

Hey! "Just add water ... and it grows!" !!! As water tends to represents emotions (another Yin, right brain, feminine-side quality) then .... take one small elephant (left brain intelligence) and add water (emotions, right brain) and add a good dose of chimp lateral thinking/ wild intuition and ... you have a BIG result.

Umm - big elephant small pond result?

That should get you thinking - laterally, Stephen!

Gidday Jane

Thanks for the thoughts.

I've been thinking a lot lately about my need to pay more attention to my personal development needs, and in particular to the pursuit of spirit and soul. This is why I'm back keeping a dream journal again and doing some reading.

Your suggestions resonate with me. My own conclusions based on other dreams have revolved around the need for me to better integrate/express Yin qualitities in my life - in terms of finding a creative outlet and in terms of better understanding my intuitive capabilities, which are strong, but somewhat primal (or wild as you have observed!).

The war/conflict scenario suggests to me the struggle between leading an essentially material life and pursuing a more soulful approach OR possibly the integration of man/monkey in a life of suburban warfare (in the dream, there was no threat or enemy apparent). This latter spin seems quite relevant because I've been on holidays for three weeks and wondering how I can keep the discipline of a dream journal/introspection and meet all the requirements of work and family life.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

What a perfectly confirming dream.

Re keeping the dream journal, perhaps your dreams will come up with some creative time-saving solutions. One I sometimes recommend is making a committment to record all the dreams you have on (say) a Friday and Saturday night (only) ... or to record one dream per night and simply give a title to any others (picking a title that kind of encapsulates the dream enough to trigger your memory).

It is worth it - the savings in other areas of life when you pay attention to your dreams is awesome!
