Subject: Hostages

My sister and brother-in-law, who are both older than me, are holding my mum, dad, dog and myself hostage in my own house.

They will not let us escape at all. My dad was washing the dishes and everyone else was occupying themselves in the house.

This was my chance to try and get my dad out. I was calling out to him at the back door, but he took his time coming. We had to be very quiet.

He finally got outside and I could see myself actually locking the clip on the door.

Then it was time to get my mum out. This time I had to go around the front of the house. My brother in law was sitting watching TV. I told my dad to occupy him while I saved my mum. While dad was talking to him I got mum out and once again I saw myself putting the clip on the door.

But there was a problem. Dad was back in the house again!! By this time my sister thought something strange was going on. She ran through the kitchen. I told my dad to run!!

We got out the house. I was carrying the dog, and dad and mum and I were all running to the car with my sister and brother-in-law chasing us. We made it to the car, got in, and locked the door.

Hi Rose-Maree,

When we dream of other people we are actually dreaming of ourselves and what those people represent in our lives.

Think about those people in your dream and try to work out what they mean to you.

What aspects of your sister and brother in law are confining those beliefs of your own that you grew up with? And is there something that you're trying to escape from at the moment?

If you put down some more ideas, we'll have more to go on with. Good luck with it.

Thanks for your ideas. The only thing i can think of is the fact that i don't get to see my sister or brother in law as much as i used to, even though they just live around the corner from me.

I used to see them and spend time with them on the weekends, but because im currently doing my HSC i have limited spare time...and when i do get to see them someone else is always there, (my brother in law's nephew) He has been visiting them for a couple of months now, more than he ever used to.

My sister and brother in law mean a lot to me, they are like someone older that i can talk to and have a laugh with..and go to concerts with, stuff like that.

In regard to trying to escape from something, i guess i would like to understand a recent relationship breakup more fully and be able to express my feelings towards it to him as he never gave me a chance to.

Hi Rose-Maree,

You've done some good work already, taking Lena's directions.

So, in waking life you're feeling a little shut out, through circumstances, from the things you used to enjoy about being with your sister and brother-in-law, and you're also feeling shut out from your recent relationship (shut out from expressing your feelings).

What feeling would you like to express to your sister and brother-in-law about your present situation?

Shut-out feelings ... and in your dream you locked or clipped a door three times (back door, front door and car door). In your dream it is YOU who is shutting or locking something behind you in order to rescue or escape ...

Think about how you feel when you are unable to express yourself in a situation or be close to people .... where does the locking occur - who locks who? Do you end up locked in or locked out? Who holds who hostage?

As Lena has said, everyone in a dream represents a belief you hold (that you have generally absorbed from them or due to your feelings about your relationship with them). So - what conflicting beliefs could there be, within you, that are playing a game of locking out or escaping from really being able to say how you feel?

Hope this helps,

Jane Teresa Anderson

Thanks Lena and Jane your ideas have helped me so much! This is all making a lot of sense to me now. You really don't think about all these different things that actually can be involved in a dream.

My sister has been there for me during any bad times that I have had when I need a shoulder to cry on..as this was a slow relationship break up I didn't get her shoulder to cry on...and therefore didn't get to express my true feelings to her.

I don't think I actually felt locked out from her...rather, locked out from my own feelings which I normally have some form of control over in situations like this. Perhaps this is why I feel a degree of jealously towards my brother in law's nephew as during that time he did receieve a lot of attention because his parents had just moved away and he looks up to my brother in law as someone who is there for him.

In a way, it can be said that I locked the door to some of my friends because they were not around when the relationship broke up and I never had a real discussion with them as to how I really felt.

I have moved on with my life since then and I feel I have gotten over the problem and I think this dream has helped me in order to do so.
