'House Askew'
Feeling
The Picture
Your feeling reactions to a dream are keys to its interpretation. These are my feelings. If this were a scene in your dream or life, how would you feel about being there?
I feel the vivid colours of summer
and recall the smell of salt: perhaps the ocean is on the other side of the cliff. I feel
there is a cliff behind the house. Yet it seems surreal: too intense, slightly beyond my
reach - yet maybe not. Is this house from my past or my future? I feel one step away: I
could walk inside the house if I could just get in synch with it. I feel unsure which is
askew: the dream picture or me. I feel a need to find my footing and straighten the
picture: to firm it up before it disappears. I really want to be in this scene. I mustn't
let it slip away.
The Symbols
Symbols in your dreams often relate to your personal memories and associations, so always consider those first. Then let your mind play with other, more general possibilities. They will not all apply! Just open your mind and notice where the symbol seems to fit and make sense of the rest of your dream.
A house, or building, often symbolises the mind
(or body) of the dreamer. The house, (especially a dream house), is you and the state of
your mind at the time of the dream. The weather seems important in this picture. Weather
in dreams tends to illustrate your feelings and emotions concerning the dream issue. If
there really is a cliff beyond the house, it may represent 'living on the edge', or, quite
to the contrary, a 'higher level' view of the unconscious (the ocean view). As you can
see, symbols alone cannot be interpreted in a dictionary fashion. Instead we must blend
the general symbolism with our personal reactions and feelings. To delve deeper, we need
to ask and answer questions about the dream scene.
The Questions
Here are some questions the dreamer of such a dream picture might ask to work towards a complete understanding of the dream.
Try these yourself: just give your 'gut reaction' answers to the questions - your answers will surprise you in the insights they deliver. The key thing to remember is, "Don't THINK about your answers - give quick gut reaction replies". Your unconscious will deliver.
If this process can work powerfully for this image, consider how infinitely more powerful the insights are when the image comes from one of your own dreams - direct from your unconscious!
* Would I like to enter this house?
* How do I feel about the size of the house?
* How do I feel about the slant of the house and land?
* What is beyond the house?
* Does this place remind me of a time in my life?
* What kind of person lives in a house like this?
* What would I have to do to make this house and place livable?
* How would I do this?
* Would I feel good about this?
* Are any of these situations and feelings reminiscent of something in my life at the
moment? What?
* So what would I have to do to improve this situation in my life now?
