What do you expect of 2009? Do you believe that life is what happens to you, or that life is what you make it? Do you believe that your destiny will be fulfilled, no matter what, or that destiny is an opportunity that requires your participation?

Last week I saw the movie Slumdog Millionaire*, about a boy from the slums of Mumbai who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of the TV show, Who wants to be a millionaire. He answers correctly and very soon is on the brink of the 20 million rupee question. The show’s organisers believe he must be cheating – there’s no way someone of his background and education could know these things. However, as the boy explains his traumatic life story it becomes clear that the answers he would need on that future TV show were seemingly placed along his way from early childhood. Looking back, he was in the right place at the right time so many times.

The real 20 million rupee question is, was he destined to always be in the right place at the right time, or was it the way he responded to each trauma that opened him up to the next right time and place? If you haven’t seen the movie, I’ll leave you to discover whether his destiny was to win the 20 million rupees or not, but I will tell you that he believed in destiny. ‘It is written,’ he said. But who was the writer? Might it have been himself? Might he have been co-author?

In the same week, I spoke to someone who had just lost his job. He said he was happy about this, because it was a boring job and he wanted something more creative. I asked him what kind of job he would like. He said he didn’t know. I asked him what he was going to do now. He said he’ll see what comes up. What kind of destiny do you predict for him?

It has often been said that we dance with destiny, and I believe that’s pretty close to how it is. I call it the do-be-do-be-do dance. It starts by declaring your intent – what you wish for – a bit like declaring, ‘I’m ready to dance, I’m over here!’ Then you must take the first step (do something) towards that destiny you envisage. After the do comes the be, a time for being, listening, watching, surrendering to the universe, allowing it to suggest some dance tunes. Then it’s time for you to do – to choose one of the dance tunes, or to change it in some way, so you can dance the next ‘do’ step. And so on, do-be-do-be-do.

It’s January 2009. What’s your next step?

My guess is that you’d like to dance towards your best destiny. And that you’d like to avoid those dances where you end up going round and round in circles driving yourself into an ever deepening rut.

Name that best destiny you’d like to reach.

Name that situation in your life where you keep ending up going round and round in circles, seemingly getting nowhere, except into an ever deepening rut.

Name your recurring dream, or recurring dream theme from 2008. A recurring dream is a specific dream that keeps repeating. A recurring dream theme is more general – for example, a theme of something missing, or not being able to find your way, or things getting overly complicated, or not being able to breathe.

Most recurring dreams don’t have satisfactory endings. They’re unresolved dreams. They reflect issues or conflicts in your life that are unresolved, issues and conflicts that keep you dancing round and round in circles, getting nowhere for lack of a suitable solution.

It’s January 2009. Make a New Year Resolution to resolve your recurring dream – to put an end to going round and round in circles and to put a beginning to dancing towards your best destiny. Call it a New Year Dream Resolution.

Resolve to discover exactly what your recurring dream theme means and why you have been going round and round in circles in at least one area in your life. Resolve to use this insight to resolve the situation once and for all. Add a dream alchemy practice, based on your dream, to speed and consolidate the best destiny outcome.

Okay, so you’ve identified the dream, you’ve made the resolution, what’s the next step? Use the enormous free resources on the website – start here. Or consult me.
