Have you seen The Secret yet? It’s a movie length DVD in a similar style to What the Bleep Do We Know, and if you haven’t heard of that movie either then where have you been for the last couple of years? A quick Google will reveal all.

I’m not sure what makes a secret a secret. How many people need to be in on a secret for it to no longer qualify as a secret? If you haven’t seen or heard anything about The Secret, I guess you’re getting pretty excited at this point. Wouldn’t you just like to know what it is?

I’m about to enlighten you and then to add an angle from the world of dreams and dream alchemy, an angle not covered in The Secret DVD, though it should be. It is, in fact, a key to using The Secret effectively. It’s the REAL secret behind the secret, and I’d love you to pass the word around the world and un-secret it as fast as you can, so that everyone who so desires can benefit from understanding and applying this missing link. Thank you.

So, first things first. What is The Secret? The Secret, the DVD points out, is a certain knowledge that has been used throughout history by highly successful people such as Plato, Leonardo, Galileo, Edison, Einstein and Carnegie, as well as an array of some of today’s best-known success icons. The knowledge is referred to as The Secret because, the DVD claims, it has been suppressed and hidden throughout history. Until now. Until the Internet. So here it is:

It’s a natural law of the universe, the law of attraction. What this means is that like attracts like, so YOU attract into your life people, situations and experiences that match your thoughts and beliefs. Another way to look at this is to say that YOU are a mass of energy and that you attract similar energies to you and repel dissimilar energies. So far I agree entirely with this. It is indeed how life works, and, once you truly know this, you can change your energy to stop attracting the things you don’t want in your life and start attracting the things you do.

The Secret DVD emphasizes one crucial point and that is that your emotions strongly influence what is or isn’t attracted into your life. I agree with this and it is important that you understand this part before looking at the dream side with me. The DVD gives the example of a man waiting in a queue, getting extremely frustrated about the wait. His emotion, while he is waiting, is frustration. He focuses on the queue and on his situation, getting more and more frustrated about being held up. So what happens? He attracts more queuing, more waiting, more delay into his life, because his strong emotion has cemented his experience (and therefore belief) in being delayed. He moves on through his day and through his weeks experiencing more and more delay, each time getting more frustrated or angry or thinking, ‘Why Me?’. The more this happens, the more he becomes this energy and so … he attracts more and more of it into his life. This is a common example of the natural law of attraction in operation, reinforced by strong emotion.

The Secret illustrates an example of how strong emotion can be used to get a desired successful outcome. It shows a man sitting in a chair with his eyes closed visualizing himself driving the car he wants. Yet he’s doing more than just visualizing. He’s smiling, he has his hands on the imaginary steering wheel, his feet are pumping gas and he looks as if he’s driving his wished-for car. He’s adding positive emotion to his visualization: joy, elation, achievement. Of course, the man gets the car because he changed his energy to match the kind of person who would have a car like that and he reinforced it with strong emotion.

Notice that both negative and positive emotions work to charge up the energy to higher attracting levels. Emotion is crucial. Just visualizing or just focussing on something you want to attract is not enough. You need to add emotion. You need to add positive emotion to attract the things you feel positive about, and avoid negative emotion to avoid attracting the things you feel negative about.

Read that last paragraph again because this is where we take a turning point from The Secret to look at the deeper secret, the one held in your dreams.

I agree that it is true that emotion adds intensity to our attracting power, and it’s especially helpful to be able to see those common situations where we don’t realise how powerfully we are attracting exactly what we don’t want into our lives simply because we don’t realise what we’re doing. Watch The Secret to get some great tips on this so you can avoid common pitfalls such as attracting delays and debt into your life through a mix of strong negative emotion and focus.

But not all emotion is conscious. We often carry extremely strong emotions in our unconscious mind, purposefully buried there to keep them ‘safely’ out of sight. Your unconscious mind holds so many beliefs, memories, experiences, attitudes, emotions and feelings of which you are totally unaware, and this is entirely natural. The problem, when it comes to the natural law of attraction, is that your unconscious mind is so much more powerful than your conscious mind. When it comes to attracting things into your life, your unconscious mind is the superior master. Your unconscious beliefs rule over your conscious beliefs and then, if you also hold strong unconscious emotions around a belief, then the power is intensified.

Since you are interested in dreams you already know that when you interpret your dreams you gain powerful insight into your unconscious mind. Through understanding your dreams you get to understand the beliefs, emotions and attitudes embedded in your unconscious mind, and you get to see how these are affecting your life through the power of attraction.

For example, imagine you want to be promoted at work. You focus on seeing yourself in that new role, you add all the sense-around positive emotions to your visualization and speak your intention loudly every day. You do everything you can do to convert your energy into the kind of energy a person in your desired job would have, to attract that job offer to you. You know you are doing all the right things, and YES, you absolutely are! It’s really important to do all of this. However, if your unconscious mind holds a strong emotional belief that you are not really good enough for a job like this, then that belief will win, and the job will fail to appear. What will you dream in such a case?

One possible common dream you may have at such a time is the slo-mo dream, where your legs are heavy or your feet feel glued to the ground. Any progress you make is slow and hard. This dream tends to come up when you have self doubt. The self doubt is what is slowing you down, holding you back. If you understand the dream you’ll be able to say, “Hey, I didn’t know I had unconscious doubts! I thought I was pretty confident!” You could then look at the details in your dream to discover how your past experiences resulted in this self doubt. So far, you have enlightenment. Your dream informs you that it is your unconscious self doubt that is attracting the kind of job offers into your life that match your level of self doubt, so where do you go from here?

Dream Alchemy. That’s the real secret. Dream alchemy is a process of changing your unconscious beliefs and emotions by working directly with your dream symbols. After all, your dream symbols ARE the language of your unconscious mind, so the way to communicate and change your unconscious mind is to use the same language.

Here’s the dream alchemy practice you would apply to the slo-mo dream if you wanted to change your unconscious self doubt into confidence to match your conscious confidence and attract that job. You visualize yourself back in the dream only this time you are walking or running freely and easily. You can even sprint, as long as it is effortless. Add all the positive emotions you associate with confidence and having that desired job while you visualize and FEEL yourself walking or running freely in your dream. Do this 20 times a day for a week, 10 times a day for the next week and twice a day for the next four weeks. That’s all you need to do. The beauty of doing Dream Alchemy Practices is that they transform your unconscious mind into alignment with your conscious mind and that’s all that’s needed to attract your chosen goal.

Don’t let your secretive unconscious mind have the last word in deciding what is or is not attracted into your life. If you really want to use The Secret effectively in your life, become a master of the secret behind The Secret: Dream Alchemy.
