Developer Belinda Handsley describes the e-dream journal ...
After becoming a member of Jane Teresa's Dream Network and deciding to make delving into my dreams a hobby, I woke one morning from a dream and got the idea for a Dream Database. But why a dream database? What's the point? What are the benefits?
Repeat dreams/symbols:
Jane says that dreams will often repeat until the dreamer understands the message the dream is trying to relate. When you notice "hey I've had a similar dream about dream symbol" a database is an easy and quick way to search to find the other dreams you've had on this subject. The database will find every single dream where a word or phrase has repeated itself. Searching this way is quicker than going through handwritten journals.
Dream data and statistical analysis:
Do you have the occasional or frequent lucid or pre-cognitive dream? Do you frequently experience synchronistic events in waking life and link them back to your dreams? Would you be interested to know how often you dream lucidly or pre-cognitively over a year? Our database allows you to check each dream with this information. When you experience Synchronicity, for example, it's simply a matter of pulling the dream up on the database, flagging the synchronicity check box and recording your experiences at the end of the record. My dream records are filled with not just this type of information, but my own personal thoughts and interpretations as well. I know I can always return to these entries and add more data as my insights deepen or as we say "when the light bulb comes on".
Forum postings:
Do you ever print out your Dream Forum postings and paste them into your dream journal? With the database, it's simply a matter of cutting and pasting your posts and others that you want to keep - just highlight, right click, copy and then go to the database and paste. You can also flag which dreams you've posted on the forum.
Dream categories:
What are your main dream themes? The database allows you to create "categories" and then print those dreams from only that category. A category might be something like "relationships" or "career". Again, you can deepen your dream insights if you pull up all dreams categoried about a particular subject and read and interpret them all together instead of only analysing a single dream.
Privacy:
The database is password protected. I like to write my personal deepest thoughts about my dreams and I'd be upset if someone got access to my hard copy dream journals. Unlikely I know - but!!!! After re-entering all my dreams onto the database, I no longer have to worry about anyone getting their hands on them. The information is now tightly sealed on my database with a password.
Personal dream dictionary:
You can also build up your own personal dream dictionary of personal symbols. There is a separate screen where you can enter this data and create reports.
Other uses:
The database produces 6 reports:
All dream records
Dreams by category
Dreams between two date ranges
Dream titles
Dream titles between two date ranges
Personal Dream Dictionary.
You can print these reports. However, the database also allows you to save these reports as text files so if you have a need to reproduce your database information in another format you can edit your text files in your word processor.
Finding yourself:
I created my own Dream Database before creating this one for the Dream Network. I found that once I had this useful tool at my finger tips, my insights just began to deepen to the point where I had so many personal breakthroughs. I would sit at my PC everyday for an hour or two and study my dreams and their meanings and record my thoughts. This was during a time when I had decided to take some time out for myself to re-evaluate my life. My favorite time of the day is waking up, making a coffee and entering the previous night's dreams in the quiet hours of the morning where I have time to think and contemplate before facing the "real world" each day.
My deepest wish is that as you use this program you will gain the benefits and insights from your own dreams as I did, in conjunction with reading Jane Teresa's books and sharing your dreams on the Dream Network. It's certainly been a really fun and exciting thing to do.
